Al-Ce

Al-Ce (Aluminum-Cerium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Al-Ce system is based primarily on the work of [57Van], [66Bus], and [69Dri]. Of the five compounds that form in this system, AlCe3 and Al2Ce form congruently (melting point 655 and 1480 C, respectively), AlCe and Al11Ce3 form peritectically at 845 and 1235 C, respectively, and Al3Ce forms peritectoidally at 1135 C. The Al-rich compound, previously reported to have Al4Ce composition, was determined by [67Gom] and [67Bus] to have Al11Ce3 stoichiometry. The presence of C is necessary to stabilize the bAlRE3 structure in several other Al-rare earth systems, but the bAlCe3 form was obtained as the pure compound [67Bus]. Three eutectic reactions occur in the Al-Ce system: L = (Ce) + bAlCe3 at ~89 at.% Ce (~98 wt.% Ce); L = bAlCe3 + AlCe at 70 at.% Ce (92.4 wt.%); and L = ( Al) + aAl11Ce3 at ~4 at.% Ce (~16 wt.% Ce). The corresponding eutectic temperatures are 580, 645, and 640 C, respectively. [69Dri] found that ~0.01 at.% Ce is soluble in Al at 640 C. 57Van: J.H.N. Van Vucht, Z.
