Al-Er

Al-Er (Aluminum-Erbium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Al-Er system is based primarily on the work of [65Bus]. The Er-rich compound, AlEr2, forms by a peritectic reaction between the melt and Al2Er3 at 1030 C. The latter compound melts congruently at 1060 C. AlEr forms from the melt and Al2Er by a peritectic reaction at 1065 C. Al2Er melts congruently at 1455 C. The Al-rich compound, Al3Er, forms by a peritectic reaction from the melt and Al2Er at 1070 C. Three eutectic compositions have been observed. The Er-AlEr2 eutectic, which contains about 78 at.% Er, has a solidification temperature of 1005 C. A second eutectic, between Al2Er3 and AlEr, contains about 58 at.% Er and solidifies at 1045 C. The Al-rich eutectic contains about 1 at.% Er and solidifies at 655 C, just below the melting point of pure Al (660.452 C). [70Mey] found that the rhombohedral Al3Ho-type structure for Al3Er is stabilized by the presence of small amounts of Si. Cubic Al3Er was reported to be a stable structure in uncontaminated metals. 65Bus: K.H.J. Buschow and J.H.N. van Vucht, Z. Metallkd., 56, 9 (1965). 70Mey: A. Meyer, J.
