Al-Y

Al-Y (Aluminum-Yttrium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Al-Y system is based primarily on the work of [60Sny] and [61Lun]. The mutual solid solubilities of each metal in the other is less than 0.03 at.%. There are five intermetallic compounds and three eutectic compositions. The compounds Al3Y, AlY, and AlY2 form by peritectic reactions from the melt and a neighboring compound at 980, 1130, and 985 C, respectively. Al2Y and Al2Y3 melt congruently at 1485 and 1100 C, respectively. The eutectic between (Al) and Al3Y occurs at ~3 at.% Y and 639 C [69Dri]. The eutectic between AlY and Al2Y3 occurs at ~58 at.% Y and 1088 C, and the eutectic between AlY2 and Y occurs at ~75 at.% and 960 C. The Y-rich compound, AlY2, has an orthorhombic Co2Si-type structure. Al2Y3 is tetragonal and is of the Al2Zr3-type. AlY is orthorhombic with the CrB-type structure, and Al2Y has the cubic Cu2Mg-type structure. Al3Y has the rhombohedral BaPb3-type structure above 645 C and the hexagonal Ni3Sn-type below. Addendum: A thermodynamic optimization of the Y-Al phase diagram was reported by [89Ran]. 60Sny: R.L. Snyder, Ph.D. dissertation, Iowa State University, Ames, IA (1960). 61Lun: C.E. Lun, Jr. and D.T.
