B-Sc

B-Sc (Boron-Scandium) K.E. Spear and P.K. Liao The equilibrium solid phases of the Sc-B system are (1) the terminal solid solutions of hexagonal (aSc), cubic (bSc), and rhombohedral (bB); and (2) the intermediate compounds ScB2 and ScB12. The assessed phase diagram is based on the experimental data of [70Pes] and [Spear] and additionally includes liquidus curves calculated from optimized Gibbs energy functions. Measurable solubility of Sc in rhombohedral bB has been reported by [70Pes]. They observed two-phase samples of ScB12 and B containing dissolved Sc for compositions between B/Sc = 20 and 100. A single-phase B solution was found for more B-rich compositions. Although experimental data on the solubility of B in (Sc) have not been published, the solubility is expected to be small (<1 at.%). [78Cal] reported a solubility of 3.5 at.% Sc in (B). 70Pes: P. Peshev, J. Etourneau, and R. Naslain, Mat. Res. Bull., 5, 319-328 ( 1970). 78Cal: B. Callmer, J. Solid State Chem., 23, 391-398 (1978).
