Ba-Zn

Ba-Zn (Barium-Zinc) H. Okamoto The assessed phase diagram for the Ba-Zn system is based primarily on the solubility data of Ba in liquid Zn given by [63Joh] for the composition range between BaZn13 and pure Zn and the data of [85Bru] for the rest of the composition range, with review of the data of [35Kor] and [61Kni]. The equilibrium phases are: (1) the liquid, L; (2) the bcc terminal phase, (Ba); ( 3) tetragonal MoSi2-type Ba2Zn; (4) CsCl-type BaZn; (5) orthorhombic BaZn2; (6) orthorhombic BaZn5; (7) fcc NaZn13-type BaZn13; and (8) the cph terminal phase, (Zn). [63Joh] measured the solubility of Ba in liquid Zn (BaZn13 liquidus) between 748 and 560 C. The result was described as log (wt.% Ba) = 10.464 - 10640/T(K) . Data of [61Kni] and [85Bru] in the composition range between BaZn13 and pure Zn agree reasonably well with the trend given by [63Joh] in the assessed diagram. [35Kor] reported very much larger solubility of Ba in liquid Zn; the specimens used by [35Kor] appear to have been in a nonequilibrium state. The L = (Zn) + BaZn13 eutectic composition is essentially 100 at.% Zn according to an extrapolation of the BaZn13 liquidus trend given by [63Joh]. Therefore, the eutectic temperature must nearly coincide with the melting point of Zn. The eutectic reaction is tentatively shown at 419.5 C in the assessed diagram. 35Kor: I.I. Kornilov, Tsvetn.
