Bi-Gd

Bi-Gd (Bismuth-Gadolinium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Gd-Bi system is based primarily on the work of [67Gam], who presented a partial phase diagram covering the composition range 0 to 60 at.% Bi. The liquidus curves in the present diagram are shown as dashed lines, because only three temperature-composition relationships on this line have been established: the melting point of Gd (1313 C), the melting point of GdBi (2015 с 15 C), and the melting point of Bi (271.442 C). The peritectic temperatures for Gd5Bi3 and Gd4Bi3 are 1275 and 1520 C, respectively. These peritectic horizontals are shown as solid lines between the compostion of the compound and the composition of the phase to which it decomposes on heating, but as a dashed line between the compound and the liquidus, because the composition at the liquidus is unknown. The composition and temperature for the eutectic between (aGd) and Gd5Bi3 were estimated. Contrary to the work of [67Gam], only one form of Gd5Bi3 is shown in the assessed diagram, because there is no evidence of an a = b transformation in this compound. Instead, the structures appear to be dependent on composition, with the hexagonal Mn5Si3-type form existing when there is a small deficiency of Gd and the orthorhombic Y5Bi3-type form existing when stoichiometric quantities of Bi are present. No solubility data are available. 67Gam: R.J. Gambino, J. Less-Common Met., 12, 344 (1967). Published in Bull. Alloy Phase Diagrams, 10(4a), Sep 1989.
