Cd-Ce

Cd-Ce (Cadmium-Cerium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The complete phase diagram for the Ce-Cd system is not available, but the existence of six compounds in the system is known from crystal structure data. In addition, microphases have been reported to exist in the CeCd~6 and CeCd~4. 5 composition regions [60Ell, 63Ell1, 63Ell2, 64Ano, 65Roo]. [66Joh] prepared a partial phase diagram for the Cd-rich (93 to 100 at.% Cd) portion of the system. Low-temperature portions of the liquidus were determined by measuring the solubility of Ce in liquid Cd. The peritectic decomposition temperature of CeCd11 was determined by differential thermal analysis. They estimated the liquidus compositions at temperatures between 520 C, the highest solubility point determined for this system, and 610 C, the peritectic temperature of CeCd11, by extrapolation of the solubility data. These investigators also estimated liquidus compositions above the peritectic temperature. The assessed phase diagram does not reflect the observations of [63Ell1] that CeCd6 is unstable at room temperature, decomposing to metallic Cd and CeCd~4.5. They concluded that at 639 C and to much lower temperatures, a CeCd11-liquid equilibrium would be metastable relative to the phases CeCd28 and CeCd19. 60Ell: G.R.B. Elliott and J.F. Lemons, J. Phys.
