Ce-Sm (Cerium-Samarium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Ce-Sm system is based primarily on the work of [68Ter] and [71Tor]. However, neither researcher considered the existence of the high-temperature cph form of Sm, bSm, in their phase diagram. This revision has been included in the assessed diagram. Because the two-phase field in this system is so narrow, the liquidus and solidus were drawn as a single straight line. Much of the phase diagram between the liquidus and the room temperature region is uncertain, but the assessed diagram is a logical interpretation of the reported data and the existence of a continuous series of solid solutions between dcph and cph rare-earth metals. [68Ter] and [71Tor] showed the bcc solid solution reacting with the rhombohedral (aSm) phase to form the dcph (bCe) solid solution by a peritectoid reaction. However, the thermal analysis data points given by these investigators are in good agreement with the solvus lines separating the bcc phase from the dcph-cph solid solution in the assessed diagram. 68Ter: V.F.
