Ce-Tl

Ce-Tl (Cerium-Thallium) S. Delfino, A. Saccone, A. Palenzona, and R. Ferro The assessed phase diagram for the Ce-Tl system is based on the work of [80Del]. The melting points of the pure metals and the transformation temperatures have been adjusted slightly to conform to [ Gschneidner]. There are six intermediate phases in the assessed diagram (Ce3Tl, Ce2Tl, Ce5Tl3, CeTl, Ce3Tl5, and CeTl3), four eutectic reactions, and a eutectoid reaction. The eutectoid reaction-decomposition of (dCe) into (gCe) and Ce3Tl- occurs at 6 at.% Tl and 620 C. Metallography results suggest a homogeneity range of about 1 at.% for the intermediate phases, except for CeTl3 (6 to 7 at. % Tl for CeTl). CeTl3, Ce2Tl, and Ce5Tl3 form peritectically at 780, 950, and 1040 C, respectively. CeTl, Ce3Tl5, and CeTl3 melt congruently at 1210, 1100, and 1060 C, respectively. The structure of Ce2Tl has not been determined. Indications of this phase were obtained from thermal and metallographic data. The maximum solid solubility of Tl in (dCe) is 9 с 1 at.% Tl at the 685 C eutectic temperature; the solubility in (gCe) is 3 с 1 at.% Tl at the 620 C eutectoid temperature. The solid solubility of Ce in (bTl) and (aTl) is assumed to be negligible. Thermodynamics and magnetic properties of Ce-Tl alloys as well as general properties of RE-Tl alloys have been studied by [88Sac]. 80Del: S. Delfino, A. Saccone, and R. Ferro, Z.
