Eu-In

Eu-In (Europium-Indium) H. Okamoto The assessed Eu-In phase diagram is based primarily on the data of [83Yat2] with review of the data of [65Kos] and [74Die]. A partial diagram for 50 to 100 at.% In proposed earlier by [65Kos] was in good agreement. The equilibrium phases are (1) the liquid, L; (2) the (Eu) terminal solid solution; (3) bEu2In, which melts at 710 C, and aEu2In, which is stable below 660 C; (4) EuIn, which melts congruently at 920 C; (5) CaIn2-type EuIn2, which melts congruently at 980 C; (6) EuIn4, which melts peritectically at 450 C; and (7) the (In) terminal solid solution, with no known homogeneity range. The solid solubility of In in (Eu) is unknown. [83Yat2] observed an undefined transition that appears to be associated with an allotropic transformation of Eu. The melting point of In is 156.634 C [Melt]. The L = EuIn3 + (In) eutectic temperature of 156 C is from [65Kos]. [83Yat2] showed a three-phase equilibrium at 160 C, which is too high because the eutectic temperature must be lower than the melting point of In. The solubility of Eu in liquid In was measured by [74Die] in the temperature range between 400 and 500 C. The solid solubility of Eu in (In) must be much less than 0.4 at.%. Accordingly, the eutectic temperature is only slightly lower than the melting point of In. 64Ian: A. Iandelli, Z. Anorg. Chem., 330, 221-232 (1964) in German. 65Kos: W. Koster and J. Meixner, Z.
