La-Lu

La-Lu (Lanthanum-Lutetium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood In a study of phase relationships in La-Lu alloys, [66Lun] reported that La-Lu alloys form a complex microstructure with a different appearance from that of the Sm-type structure formed in other alloy systems of a light and a heavy rare earth metal. X-ray analysis failed to confirm the presence of the Sm-type structure in this system. These data suggest that a two-phase miscibility gap exists in the low-temperature region of this system. The evaluators, however, suggest an alternate model for the phase equilibria in this region of the La-Lu system. At high temperature, they propose that the dcph La and cph Lu phases form a continuous series of solid solutions, which on cooling form a miscibility gap between the two terminal solid solutions. Such phase relationships have been observed in the Nd-Sc system. Editor's note: The La-Lu phase diagram was drawn by [Moffatt] to indicate the qualitative features of the system summarized in [85Gsc]. This system is similar to Gd-La. 66Lun: C.E.
