Mg-U

Mg-U (Magnesium-Uranium) A.A. Nayeb-Hashemi and J.B. Clark The assessed Mg-U phase diagram at 3 atm is based on the work of [56Chi] and [ 58Chi]. The system is characterized by a miscibility gap extending almost from pure Mg to pure U. The presence of this large miscibility gap suggests that a monotectic reaction L1 = L2 + (aU), or possibly a syntectic reaction L1 + L2 = (aU), occurs in the U-rich region (>99.0 at.% U) at 1133 C. The allotropic phase changes of gU = bU and bU = aU divide the (U) + L phase field at 776 and 668 C, respectively. There is also an indication of the existence of a peritectic reaction for the formation of the (Mg) solid solution in the Mg-rich corner of the diagram close to the melting point of Mg (650 C) and in the U-rich corner of the diagram for the formation of (aU), close to the transformation temperature of bU to aU. The solubility of U in liquid Mg was determined by [58Chi] to be 20 x 10-5 and 70 x 10-5 at.% U at 650 and 700 C, respectively. 56Chi: P. Chiotti, G.A. Tracy, and H.A. Wilheim, Trans.
