Ni-Os

Ni-Os (Nickel-Osmium) P. Nash Only one investigation of the Ni-Os phase diagram over the whole composition range has been reported [51Kos]. Only two solid phases were found-the (Os) and (Ni) terminal solid solutions. The microstructures suggest peritectic melting of (Ni), which is consistent with the large difference in melting points of the two components. In the absence of detailed information on the system, the assessed phase diagram is based on thermodynamic modeling. [51Kos] determined the solubility limits to be 5 at.% Os in (Ni) and 38 at.% Ni in (Os); however, because the alloys were furnace cooled one cannot ascribe a temperature to these values. The solubility of Os in (Ni) was found to exceed 9.3 at.% after quenching from 1200 C [51Kos]. [77Sam] determined the partition coefficient in a Ni-0.03 at.% Os alloy as 2. 47, confirming the increasing liquidus temperature on adding Os to Ni. 51Kos: W. Koster and E.
