Ni-Sn

Ni-Sn (Nickel-Tin) P. Nash and A. Nash The assessed Ni-Sn phase diagram is based on review of the work of [1890Hey], [ 1896Gau], [07Gui], [08Vos], [34Han], [37Mik], and [43Heu]. The intermediate Ni3Sn phase has a solubility range of 23.3 to 25.6 at.% Sn at low temperatures and has the Mg3Cd-type structure. There is a congruent transition to the hexagonal high-temperature form at 977 C and 25 at.% Sn. The total solubility range of the Ni3Sn (HT) compound is 22.9 to 26.8 at.% Sn. The Ni3Sn4 phase has a solubility range of 55.5 to 57 at.% Sn below ~600 C, which narrows to 55.5 at.% Sn at 794.5 C. The solubility of Ni in (Sn) is less than 0.005 at.% Ni, and the solubility limit of Sn in (Ni) determined from the Curie points is 9.7 at.% Sn [37Mar]. Electrodeposited 47.9 to 51.2 at.% Sn forms a single-phase intermetallic compound with a hexagonal NiAs unit cell, which decomposes above 350 C into the equilibrium phases Ni3Sn2 and Ni3Sn4. At a slow rate of heating (10 C/min with pauses of 30 min at 50 C intervals), a Ni3Sn2/Ni3Sn4 phase mixture has been produced. The mechanism of transformation is associated with grain boundary diffusion for thin foil samples containing 43 to 52.4 at.% Sn. On rapid heating, the phase separation reaction to Ni3Sn4 and Ni3Sn2 was suppressed and replaced by a rapid transformation to a supersaturated phase with a similar structure to Ni3Sn2, which yielded the equilibrium phases on aging above 400 C. (Ni) solid solubility can be extended to 16.8 at.% Sn by rapid solidification. 1890Hey: C.T. Heycock and F.H. Neville, J. Chem. Soc., 57, 376-393 (1890). 1896Gau: H. Gautier, Bull. Soc. Encour. Int.
