Pb-Se

Pb-Se (Lead-Selenium) J.-C. Lin, R.C. Sharma, and Y.A. Chang The Pb-Se system contains an intermediate phase, PbSe, with a narrow composition range of stability at 50 at.% Se. In the Pb-PbSe region, a eutectic reaction occurs close to pure Pb. A liquid miscibility gap, a monotectic reaction, and a eutectic reaction occur in the PbSe-Se region. The solubility of Se in (Pb) is 0.004 at.% Se at 300 C, but there are no reported measurements on the solubility of Pb in (Se). The assessed phase diagram is based on thermodynamic modeling and calculations, with review of the work of [55Noz], [61Sei], [66Sei], [66Mil], and [74Sch]. It has been calculated assuming that PbSe is a line compound. There is fairly good agreement between the calculated liquidus and the available experimental data. The liquidus in the Pb-PbSe region has an inflection point, which is indicative of a metastable liquid miscibility gap at lower temperatures. PbSe, a semiconductor compound, has a cubic (NaCl-type) structure at atmospheric pressure and transforms to an orthorhombic (GeS-type) structure at ~43 kbar. 55Noz: R. Nozato and K. Isaki, Bull.
