Sm-Y

Sm-Y (Samarium-Yttrium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed Sm-Y phase diagram is based on the work of [67Lun], who constructed a phase diagram for the high-temperature (above 800 C) portion of this system based on thermal analysis data. Complete solubility was observed in the liquid phase, in the bcc solid solution, and in the cph solid solution. Because a two-phase region was found in similar intra-rare-earth systems, the present diagram was drawn with dashed lines enclosing a narrow two-phase region. This postulated two-phase region is shown at room temperature at compositions between 16 and 20 at.% Y, narrowing at higher temperatures until it meets the 100 at.% Sm boundary at 734 C, where pure Sm transforms from the rhombohedral to the cph structure. All compositions on the Sm-rich side of the two-phase field have the rhombohedral Sm-type structure below 734 C. The two-phase region has not been confirmed experimentally. 67Lun: C.E.
