Au-C

Au-C (Gold-Carbon) H. Okamoto and T.B. Massalski The assessed Au-C phase diagram is based primarily on a review of the literature [Hultgren,E; 04Hem; 69Mcl]. The equilibrium phases of the Au-C system are (1) the liquid, L, having about 4.7 at.% solubility of C in liquid Au [04Hem]; (2) the fcc terminal solid solution, (Au), having about 0.08 at.% solid solubility of C in (Au); and (3) the graphite-type terminal solid solution, (C), with no reported solubility of Au. The solid solubility of C in solid Au was measured by a vapor transport technique [69Mcl] in the temperature range between 810 and 1027 C. Thin foils of Au were equilibrated with a CO/CO2 gas atmosphere in silica ampules, and the solubilities were determined with a combustion apparatus for measurement of low carbon concentrations. When acetylene is introduced into a solution of a complex thiosulfate of Au, the acetylide (Au2C2) is formed. Crystalline Au2C2 is extemely explosive. 04Hem: W. Hempel, A. Agnew.
