Fe-Li

Fe-Li (Iron-Lithium) J. Sangster and C.W. Bale The Fe-Li system is virtually completely immiscible in the solid and liquid states. In the assessed diagram, it is assumed that the solubility of Li in solid Fe is negligible. The solubility limits of Fe in liquid Li are only approximate. Because the melting points of Fe and Li differ by more than 1300 C, little solubility of Li in Fe at ordinary pressures would be expected. The solubility of Fe in Li is sensitive to trace impurities in Li, principally oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon, with oxygen being the most critical impurity [ 67Ant]. Solubility data are given in [Kubaschewski]. No Fe-Li compounds have been reported. The standard enthalpy of formation of several Fe-Li alloys FexLi1-x(x = 0.17 to 0.83) was calculated according to an atomic model [83Nie]. The values were all positive, suggesting that compounds in this system are thermodynamically unlikely. The enthalpy of solution of liquid Fe in liquid Li at infinite dilution calculated on the same basis [83Nie] was found to be 96 kJ/mol. 67Ant: D.F. Anthrop, U.S. At. Energy Comm. Rep.
