Ni-U

Ni-U (Nickel-Uranium) D.E. Peterson The assessed U-Ni phase diagram is based primarily on the work of [53Gro]. The features are in general agreement with an earlier study by [45Foo], although additional compounds were reported by [53Gro]. [53Gro] found the solubilities in the terminal phase to be quite limited. The solubility of Ni in (gU) appears to attain a maximum of 2 at.% Ni at 790 C and to decrease to about 1.25 at.% Ni at the eutectoid temperature (760 C). The solubility of Ni in (bU) appears to be about 1 at.% Ni at 760 C and to decrease to 0.1 at.% Ni at 700 C. Ni solubility in (aU) is small at all temperatures. These values were in excellent agreement with solubilities determined earlier by [45Foo]. There is a small U solubility in (Ni). [53Gro] noted that an alloy of 0.18 at.% U quenched from 1000 C contained one phase, but when it was heated to 950 C and quenched, it showed an additional precipitated phase. Two additional compounds, designated d and e, were proposed by [53Gro]. Alloys in the compositional range of these two compounds are malleable, whereas adjacent phases were found to be brittle. Anomalous thermal effects were noted in this part of the assessed diagram; therefore, further studies of this region should be conducted. There is no structural information available concerning the d and e compounds. [74Leb] concluded that another compound (h) may exist on the U-rich side of UNi5, at about 82 at.% Ni. There is no structural information available concerning this phase, and inclusion of this compound in the phase diagram awaits further confirmation. 45Foo: F.C. Foote, J.R. Clark, M. Cieslicki, B.J.
