Ag-U

Ag-U (Silver-Uranium) M.R. Baren The assessed phase diagram for the Ag-U system is based mainly on the work of [ 54Buz]. The main features of this diagram include a monotectic at 99.5 at.% U and 1132 C with an extensive miscibility gap, a eutectic at 2.3 at.% U and 950 C, and limited solid solubility at both ends of the diagram. There are no intermediate phases or intermetallic compounds. Metallographic analysis of Ag-U alloys indicated that the solubility of U in ( Ag) lies between 0.054 and 0.182 at.% U at room temperature, with little change between 25 and 950 C. There was no appreciable solid solubility of Ag in (U). A eutectic-like structure was observed in both Ag-rich and U-rich alloys. The metallographic analysis indicated a eutectic composition of approximately 99.5 at.% U. [55Voi] determined that the solubility of U in (Ag) at 1135 C is approximately 2 at.% U, whereas the solubility of Ag in (U) at the same temperature is approximately 0.07 at.% Ag. In addition to the thermal arrests at 1132 and 950 C, arrests were also observed at 762 and 653 C in both the Ag-rich and U-rich alloys. These arrests correspond to the g = b and b = a transformations in U and were unaffected by Ag. The accepted transformation temperatures are 776 and 668 C, respectively. 54Buz: R.W. Buzzard, D.P.
