B-Cd (Boron-Cadmium) P.K. Liao and K.E. Spear Very little experimental work has been done on the phase equilibria for the Cd- B system. The assessed phase diagram is based on the prediction of [65Wal]. The equilibrium phases are (1) the liquid; (2) the terminal solid solution based on hexagonal Cd; and (3) the terminal solid solution based on b- rhombohedral B. The solid solution has negligible composition range. The melting temperatures of Cd and B are accepted as 321.108 C (IPTS-86) and 2092 C [81Spe], respectively. [65Wal] postulates that a monotectic reaction exists in the system, and that no compounds are formed. Because no experimental data on the liquidus have been reported, the miscibility gap in the liquid phase and the eutectic reaction with a composition close to pure Cd are schematically shown. Mixtures of B and Cd were sintered at 800 to 1100 C [57Mar], and no compounds or solubilities in the solid state in the system were detected. [71Kor] indicates that zone-melted b-rhombohedral B does not react with molten Cd, whereas amorphous B forms a blackish-brown powder containing about 0.5 at.% Cd at 800 C.
