B-Hg

B-Hg (Boron-Mercury) P.K. Liao and K.E. Spear Very little experimental work has been done on the phase equilibria for the Hg- B system. [1809Dav], who conducted the first and probably the only study regarding the Hg-B system, reported the absence of a reaction between B and Hg when heated. The assessed equilibrium phase diagram is based on the prediction of [65Wal]. The equilibrium phases are (1) the liquid, L; (2) the terminal solid solution based on the rhombohedral (Hg); and (3) the terminal solid solution based on rhombohedral (bB). Both solid solutions have negligible composition ranges. [65Wal] postulates that a monotectic reaction exists in the system and that no compounds are formed. Because no experimental data on the liquidus in this system have been reported, the miscibility gap in the liquid phase and the eutectic reaction with a liquid composition close to pure Hg are shown schematically in the assessed diagram. 1809Dav: H.
