Bi-Nd

Bi-Nd (Bismuth-Neodymium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed Nd-Bi phase diagram is based on the work of [75Yos] and [70Kob], with some modifications. The accepted melting and transformation temperatures of Nd (1021 and 863 C, respectively) and the melting temperature of Bi (271 C) have been used. Because the eutectic temperature and composition and the solid solubility of Bi in the Nd-rich phases are not consistent with the corresponding properties of other rare earth-Bi systems, this part of the assessed diagram is drawn as dashed lines, showing considerably less solid solubility of Bi in b and aNd than reported by [70Kob]. The Bi-rich portion has been drawn as dashed lines to indicate uncertainty in the exact nature of the effect of Nd on the melting point of Bi. Five intermediate phases exist in the Nd-Bi system: Nd2Bi, Nd5Bi3, Nd4Bi3, NdBi2, and NdBi. Nd4Bi3 and NdBi2 form peritectically, and NdBi melts congruently. No information is available on the formation of Nd5Bi3, but it is assumed to form peritectically above 1150 C in a similar fashion to the phase relationships in the La-Bi system. The averaged solubility data of [61Sch] and [72Smi] show that 0.01 at.% Nd is soluble in Bi at 300 C and 0.8 at.% at 600 C. 61Sch: D.G. Schweitzer and J.R. Weeks, Trans.
