Ce-Sc

Ce-Sc (Cerium-Scandium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Ce-Sc system is based primarily on the work of [64Nau]. The melting points and transformation temperatures of the pure metals have been adjusted to conform with the accepted values. Ce and Sc are miscible in the liquid state over the entire composition range, and a continuous region of high-temperature bcc solid solutions extends from pure Ce to pure Sc. At about 680 C, this high-temperature solid solution was observed to decompose eutectoidally to fcc (gCe) and cph (aSc) solid solutions. The addition of Sc to Ce broadens the fcc (gCe) region and narrows the dcph ( bCe) region. According to [64Nau], the room-temperature solid solubility limit of Sc in Ce is about 17 at.% Sc and that of Ce in Sc is about 12 at.% Ce. X-ray diffraction analysis of alloys in the two-phase region revealed that all lines that occur can be accounted for as belonging to either (gCe) or (aSc), and no Sm-type structure exists in this system. 64Nau: O.P.
