Er-Nd

Er-Nd (Erbium-Neodymium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Er-Nd system is based on the work of [66Lun] , which studied the nature of the formation of the Sm-type structure, d phase. The d phase is formed by a congruent transformation, as in the Gd-La system. The upper portion of the diagram has been revised to bring melting temperatures and the aNd = bNd transformation temperature into accord with the currently accepted value. Earlier work of [72Kob] on phase relationships in the Er-Nd system using thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and metallographic observations were also reviewed and used in constructing the present diagram. [72Kob] showed the Sm-type structure to be the Er2Nd3 compound, formed by a peritectoid reaction during the cooling of two phases based on the solid solutions of (Er) and (aNd) (cph and dcph structures). This view is not accepted here. The (Er) and (aNd) phases are mutually soluble, forming a continuous phase field across the diagram. 66Lun: C.E.
