Ga-Mg

Ga-Mg (Gallium-Magnesium) A.A. Nayeb-Hashemi and J.B. Clark The equilibrium phases of the Mg-Ga system are (1) the liquid, L; (2) the terminal solid solution, (Mg), with a solubility limit of 3.14 at.% Ga; (3) the stoichiometric Mg5Ga2 intermediate phase with a complex cubic structure; ( 4) the Mg2Ga phase with a complex hexagonal structure and the possibility of a homogeneity range extending from 31 to 37 at.% Ga; (5) the stoichiometric MgGa phase with a complex bct structure; (6) the stoichiometric MgGa2 phase with an orthorhombic structure; (7) the stoichiometric Mg2Ga5 phase with a bct structure; and (8) the terminal solid solution, (Ga), with negligible solubility of Mg. The liquidus in the assessed phase diagram is taken from [ 37Pus] and [38Hum], and the (Mg) solidus and solvus are from [38Hum]. The studies of [69Pre], [80Ell], and [81Pre] were also reviewed. The formation of supersaturated (Mg) solid solutions of up to 14 at.% Ga have been reported, as well as a glass phase in a splat-cooled alloy of 18.73 at.% Ga. When the glass phase was heated, a metastable intermetallic compound of 18. 73 at.% Ga was formed. [80Ell] reported the formation of a metastable-type MgGa2 compound, isotypic with CaIn2, during the solidification of the undercooled liquid alloy. [61Cur] reported a metastable modification of Ga with an orthorhombic structure, which formed from crystallization of supercooled liquid at -16.3 C. 37Pus: N.A. Puschin and O.D. Micic, Z. Anorg.
