Hg-Yb

Hg-Yb (Mercury-Ytterbium) C. Guminski The assessed Yb-Hg phase diagram is based on [68Kir], with modifications in the regions of the most Hg-rich as well as Yb-rich phases. A hypothetical constrained vapor diagram was sketched by [Moffatt], presuming similarity to La-Hg and Pr-Hg, which contain similar phases. However, [65Ian], [66Pal], and [ 68Ian] revealed that Yb behaves as a divalent alkaline earth metal; therefore, some differences in the Yb-Hg phase diagram are expected in relation to the lanthanide series. The significant difference in YbHg and YbHg2 stabilities at normal pressure should lead to peritectic rather than congruent formation of YbHg2 at elevated pressure. It seems that, at minimum, one intermetallic compound richer in Hg than Yb14Hg51 is formed in the system, but this requires experimental verification. 65Ian: A. Iandelli and A. Palenzona, J.
