In-Li

In-Li (Indium-Lithium) J. Sangster and A.D. Pelton The assessed In-Li phase diagram is based on the data of [70Thu] and [76Ale], with review of the data of [69Lam] and [80Wen]. In the assessed diagram, the In-rich invariant is tentatively shown as a peritectic. Under the assumption of limiting Raoultian behavior of the solid and liquid solutions, for a peritectic temperature of 159 C the ratio of the liquid and solid compositions can be calculated thermodynamically from the enthalpy of fusion of In. The result shows that the liquid and solid phases have virtually the same composition. Because the data clearly indicate a solubility of Li in the liquid of 2 at.% or less, the solubility in the solid must be on the same order. In the assessed diagram, a solubility of approximately 1 at.% Li in the liquid and solid phases at 159 C is shown. If the invariant is actually a eutectic, then the solubility of Li in solid (In) must be even lower. The boundaries of the InLi phase remain ill defined. The limits of homogeneity at 415 C are 47 and 63 at.% Li [80Wen]. [70Thu] and [76Ale] suggested the existence of one or more compounds between In3Li13 and (Li). The shape of the liquidus of [76Ale], which has been adopted in the assessed diagram, indicates a possible peritectic reaction near 280 C. The predicted phase transition pressure for the compound InLi undergoing the process B32 (NaTl) = B2 (CsCl) has been calculated as 21 kbar from the local density approximation of the total energy [85Chr]. 33Zin: E.
