In-Mn (Indium-Manganese) H. Okamoto The assessed In-Mn phase diagram is based on the thermal and magnetic investigations of [68Kop]. Earlier thermal, metallographic, and X-ray investigations of [50Zwi] yielded a similar diagram. However, invariant temperatures of reactions involving gMn and bMn were about 40 C lower than the assessed values. [50Zwi] reported the L + (dMn) = (gMn) peritectic temperature as about 1172 C. This reaction temperature may also be underestimated. The liquidus composition at this temperature is ~95 at.% Mn [ 50Zwi]. The phase diagram in this range is very uncertain. The solubility of In in (bMn) is about 14 at.% at 800 C [50Zwi]. According to lattice parameter data, the solid solubility of In in (aMn) decreases with decreasing temperature [50Zwi]. The diffraction pattern of InMn3 at 6 and 82 K indicated that there is a crystallographic change at 100 to 143 K [78Bro]. This transformation is probably related to a magnetic transition. Two metastable phases were found to form by rapid cooling at rates of 107 to 108 C/s [75Gud]. The W-type bcc phase found in an 86 at.% Mn alloy may be in the range of the metastable extension of (dMn). Another phase with unknown structure was found in an 88 at.% Mn alloy. According to [62Aoy], InMn3 is ferromagnetic, with a Curie temperature of 310 C. However, [78Bro] found antiferromagnetism in InMn3 with a N‚el temperature of 75 K.
