Mg-Nb

Mg-Nb (Magnesium-Niobium) J.F. Smith The assessed phase diagram for the Mg-Nb system is based primarily on the work of [63Sav] and represents the equilibria to be expected in a closed system where the pressure is sufficient to constrain the phases to condensed form. [ 63Sav] found no intermediate phases. Extensive immiscibility was observed in both liquid and solid states, with a monotectic reaction occurring 70 C below the melting point of Nb. No solubility of Nb in solid (Mg) was detectable, and the melting point of Mg in the alloys was not observably different from the 650 C melting point of pure Mg. The solubility of Nb in liquid Mg was reported as 0.05 wt.% Nb at 1200 C. Solubility of Mg in solid (Nb) was indicated to be about 0.04 wt.% Mg in very slowly cooled alloys at room temperature, increasing with increasing temperature. 63Sav: E.M. Savitskii, V.V.
