Nd-Sm

Nd-Sm (Neodymium-Samarium) K.A. Gschneidner, Jr. and F.W. Calderwood The assessed phase diagram for the Nd-Sm system is based on the work of [75Kob] . The diagram of [75Kob] showed a narrow two-phase region between the liquidus and solidus lines and also between the solvus lines. Their diagram showed complete solid solubility for the high-temperature alloys. There was no indication of three allotropic forms of Sm in their diagram, and a two-phase region for the coexistence of (aNd) dcph and (aSm), the Sm-type, was partially indicated by dotted lines. Because Nd and Sm are trivalent metals having atomic numbers that differ by two and because complete solid solubility was demonstrated for the high- temperature (bcc) phase, the melting points of the end members have been joined by a straight line in the present diagram, eliminating the liquidus- solidus gap. For the same reason, the transformation temperature of the pure metals to the bcc form also are joined by a straight line, and the solvus gap is thus eliminated. The phase boundaries in the Sm-rich regions below the (bSm) = (gSm) transformation have been drawn with dashed lines to indicate the uncertainty in their location. 75Kob: G.F. Kobzenko and E.L.
